True to its name, the Cheboygan Crib Light was originally set offshore to help guide travelers into the Cheboygan River. But its foundation settled until the entire structure toppled over into the channel. Instead of destroying the now useless structure, the people of Cheboygan pulled the light ashore and gave it a new home on a short pier on the west bank of the rivermouth
