This light can be seen from the shore of the UP but since it is on an island, a boat gets you the view you want. It was built in 1873. The original lens was a three and one half order Fresnel. It is 71 feet. The light was automated in 1923 (according to the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association web site [GLLKA]). On the State of Michigan web site it says it was automated in 1922. The GLLKA took a 30 year lease on the site in 1986. This group along with the Boy Scouts work each summer at restoration. The Association offers day trips and tours of the tower, the keeper's home and outbuildings.
